A Pigment Dyed Stenciled Fragment: Lyrical Design
early twentieth century
40" x 13", 101.5 cm x 33 cm
This length of cotton cloth was stenciled in what seems to be a pigment-based dye; the surface of the cloth is stiff from the application of this dark, grey dye stuff.
The design is really lovely and delicate. It shows a repeat pattern of two stylized variations on the paulownia motif which are diagonally-oriented and connected by linear and lyrical arabesques.
As described above, the cotton is slightly stiff from the pigment dye--it has the same texture as cloth that has been starched.
A beautifully designed and dyed length of cotton from old Japan.
