A Patched Length of Striped Cotton: Beautifully Distressed
ca. early twentieth century
79" x 14", 200.5 cm x 35.5 cm
This is a length of cotton cloth that shows stripes of a deep indigo, white and a dull, ochre/khaki color. The warp-based stripes are fairly narrow and there are quite a few of them moving from left to right along this length.
This long piece is hand stitched from two, shorter pieces. There is a good-sized patch to the surface, also hand stitched. The patch mimics katazome dyed cotton, but it seems commercially produced.
An interesting feature to this cloth is the vertically-oriented abrasions to the stripes, which add a kind of character to the cloth. There are a few, match head sized holes, about three in total, on this piece of hand loomed cotton.
Handsome.
