A Patched Hemp Cloth: Kanji
ca. late nineteenth century
43" x 27", 109 cm x 68.5 cm
This is a really lovely, antique fragment of hemp cloth which is hand finished on its two short ends. The fragment is marked with 5 1/2 hand drawn kanji or Chinese characters; there are two mending patches to the surface, one near the top hem, and one just south of center.
This old hemp cloth is from Fukui Prefecture which faces the Sea of Japan, on Honshu Island's "northern" coast.
A marvelous piece of old Japan and a beautiful folk textile which still begs to be admired.
