A Pair of Small Diapers: Two Techniques

$36.00 USD

mid twentieth century
smaller: 15 1/4" x 7 1/4", 38.5 cm x 18.5 cm
larger: 20" x 6 3/4", 51 cm x 17 cm

This is a pair of small, narrow cotton figured textiles, each piece is recycled and two layers thick.  It was said that this pair was used as diapers for a newborn, their very small size and the layered configuration of cloth giving way to this assumption.

The longer cloth on the left is indigo dyed katazome cotton which shows one patch of a different pattern than the base.  The cloth on the right shows two techniques: the base is a very faded miura shibori which is overdyed using the chusen method of stencil dyeing. The chusen dyed pattern is a lovely, playful repeat of chidori or plovers.

Each of these lovely, diapers is made of recycled cloth and shows a good deal of fading and wear from age.

Delightful.
