A Pair of Indigo Dyed Hemp Momohiki: Traditional Boro Leggings
early twentieth century
as shown: 28" x 28", 71 cm x 71 cm
Momohiki are a style of wrap-around, tight fitting work trousers that were worn in all areas of old Japan.
This is a pair should be considered if you have been hoping to find a good pair of momohiki for your collection. The reason for this is that this pair is made primarily from rustically woven, indigo dyed hemp cloth. Work garments of hemp like this one, speak volumes on life in old Japan where bast fiber clothing was worn before the advent of cotton in the early 19th century.
Please pay special attention to the detail photos which accompany this entry which show the heavy patina of the surface, the patches--both of hemp and cotton--and the wonderful tie whose two ends are sashiko stitched, which can be seen in the accompanying detail photographs.
A beautiful pair of old Japanese work trousers.
Very recommended.
