A Pair of Indigo Dyed Cotton Arm Guards: Mended
early twentieth century
each: 18 1/2" x 5", 47 cm x 12.75 cm
This is a pair of indigo dyed cotton arm guards which are nicely mended and well-worn.
The set of two pieces was slipped over the forearms to protect them and the backs of the hands while working--such accessories were part of a traditional set of work wear worn by Japanese farmers or those who worked outdoors.
As is clear from looking at the attached detail photos the mending done on each of these is beautiful. There are two cotton cords on each of the arm guards, one of purple and white colored kasuri cotton and one of indigo dyed cotton. As well, there is a very smart detail of white sashiko stitching on the bottom edge of each of the arm guards.
A lovely set of good looking traditional work wear that are artfully mended and in good condition.
