A Nineteenth Century Pieced Han Juban: Botanical Dyes, Re-Used Silks

$95.00 USD

mid to late nineteenth century
24" x 48", 61 cm x 122 cm

This beautifully colored silk han juban or half under kimono is hand stitched from repurposed silk pieces, all of them dyed in botanical dyes.

The color palette of the garment is rich and gentle: the muted teal tone of the outside, the gromwell root or shikon purple pieces, the safflower or benibana lining all congregate to create a harmonious whole and one that washes richly over the eyes.

The han juban has some tatters and damage, some of which is shown on the detail photos here. As it is a silkĀ garment and as old silk is brittle or splits it is not recommended to wear this: it is to be admired.

For those interested in natural dyeing this is a wonderful study piece. But its beauty stands on its own and begs to be appreciated.

Wonderful.
