A Modernist Length of Akita Shibori: White on Blue
ca. early twentieth century
long piece: 41" x 12", 104 cm x 30 cm
short piece: 22" x 12", 56 cm x 32.5 cm
These pieces of indigo dyed Akita shibori cotton are beautiful and odd: we are not sure what the shibori-dyed design motif is, but whatever it is, it is attractive in its modernist appeal and its stark white-on-blue contrast.
The long piece is hand stitched from two lengths, shows one patch on the back and two very small holes. The short piece is also repaired with one patch.
The cotton is hand loomed, the indigo is botanical and very rich--almost velvety--in appearance. The white, undyed areas of cotton are bright white, which may not be evident when looking at the accompanying photos where the white is a bit distorted in tone.
This is a really attractive pair of old cotton shibori.
