A Lovely Length of Cotton Kaya: Patched and Stitched
ca. early twentieth century
78 1/2" x 13", 199.5 cm x 33 cm
This is a particularly beautiful, cotton boro kaya or mosquito netting. Its beauty resides in its lovely, warm blue color, almost a cornflower blue: it is clear, rich and easy on the eyes.
The patching to this kaya is also lovely, with 6 patches in total: four are cotton cloth and two are the same cotton cloth as the base. Each is hand stitched to the base cloth, and their placement and spacing is just wonderful. Pay special attention to the stark, white stitching on the center, right of this panel.
There is some abrasion and loss this boro kaya which can be seen most noticeably on the proper, left hand, top of the length.
A visual treat, this boro kaya has many alluring qualities, chief among them its indigo dyed color.
