A Lightweight Sakiori Obi: Blues, Greens and Ochre
ca. mid twentieth century
128" x 6 1/4", 325 cm x 15.75 cm
Shown here is a sakiori obi, a kimono sash that has been woven using a cotton warp and a cotton rag weft.
The obi's warp is of black cotton whose color adds a lovely, dulling quality to the shredded rag warp yarns that are a variegated drab hue, ochre, warm blue, sky blue and olive green. By "lightweight' we mean that the obi is fairly loosely woven and therefore is not dense or heavy in the hand.
As this obi was worn by its previous owner or maker, it shows a faint, ingrained crease down the center of its length. Otherwise, the obi is in very good, used condition.
Beautiful colors--and a beautiful obi.
