A Length of Yellow Dyed Hemp Mesh: Mosquito Netting
$35.00 USD
early to mid twentieth century
70" x 13 3/4", 178 cm x 3 cm
This length of hemp mesh kaya or mosquito netting is unusual for its yellow color--most kaya were either blue, green or undyed.
This one is a section from a larger piece, a large tent that would have been hung inside the home to encircle and protect the sleeping family. Japan is famous for its humidity and heat in summers and it is also plagued by mosquitoes, so almost every family who could have one hung a mosquito net in their home.
The length is likely machine plied, not hand plied, but it is in good condition and shows a lovely, golden color.
