A Length of White on Blue Katazome: Spare, Linear Pattern
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
30" x 13", 76 cm x 33 cm
This indigo dyed cotton katazome length shows a really interesting, highly stylized--almost abstracted-- pattern.
The spare pattern shows folding fans, a languid stream, cherry blossoms, checkerboards--and intersecting lines that suggest the hexagon or tortoise shell, a symbol of long life.
The cloth is hand woven and is composed of two, separate pieces which are hand stitched together.
A beautiful, unusual example of katazome dyeing.
