A Length of White-on-Blue Reversible Katazome Cotton: Hand Spun Yarns
late nineteenth century
46" x 12 1/2", 116.75 cm x 31.75 cm
This length of white-on-blue katazome cotton cloth is beautifully bright and fresh looking, probably due to faint wear over time, but more importantly due to the fact that it was stencil resist dyed on both sides which makes for a brighter, more contrasty finished image.
The repeat pattern is that of cherry blossoms, folding fans and a large, pleasant looking flower in vertical configuration. The indigo dyed is inky dark--almost black--and very fresh-looking.
The cotton yarns which compose this cloth seem to be hand spun and the cotton is of good weight and texture.
An extremely handsome and lovely length of cloth, with great color and with a great technique that produced it.
