A Length of Unused Katazome Cotton: Sparse Diverse Pattern

$75.00 USD

early twentieth century
40" x 12 3/4", 101.5 cm x 32.5 cm

This length of seemingly unused indigo dyed cotton katazome cloth was stencil resisted on both its sides making it "reversible." The dyeing is imperfect and shows some bleeding and blurring.

The pattern is interesting as it is a collection of traditional motifs: folding fans, chrysanthemums, cherry blossoms and a geometric shape that looks like a molecule structure but in fact is a reference to tortoise shell.

The repeat pattern is lively and punchy and is a wonderful blend of several different Japanese design ideas.

The indigo tone is still dark and rich and the cloth is in fine condition.
