A Length of Two Katazome Cotton Pieces: Stitched Patterns
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
44 1/2" x 12 1/2",113 cm x 31.75 cm
This length of katazome or stencil resist indigo dyed cotton is hand stitched from two pieces, each bearing a different resit-dyed pattern.
The top design shows the traditional tatewaku or undulating line design that is interspersed with stylized chrysanthemums; the bottom design shows, again, stylized chrysanthemums in alternating, diagonal rows of cherry blossoms. Please note the stain to the seam of the cloth, as shown on the detail photos accompanying this post.
The indigo is clear and rich and the resisted whites are brighter than what is shown here; the piece is in good, used condition.
A lovely length of katazome dyed cotton.
