A Length of Beautiful Stitched Shibori: Grey and Blue Zigzags
early to mid twentieth century
56" x 13", 142.25 cm x 33 cm
This length of stitched shibori was taken from a yukata which is a casual, unlined cotton kimono worn during summers. As such, it shows some ingrained creases and a very slight stain at the bottom, unfinished hem.
The pattern is one of repeat of horizontal-based zigzags created by stitching the cloth: the motif could be that of yabane or arrow feathers.
The ground color is a pale blue-grey; there are white undyed highlights and dark blue details--this kind of grey, blue and white shibori seems to have been produced in Japan around the 1930s or so.
This is a very handsome length of old shibori. Delightful.
