A Length of Sunrise or Hinode Shibori: Unusual Brown Dye

$80.00 USD

early to mid twentieth century
60" x 14 1/4", 152.5 cm x 36 cm

This is a length of cotton which is dyed in the shibori method, the technique used here producing a pattern called hinode or sunrise. The pattern itself is a desirable one and the fact that this is dyed in a brown colored dye makes this very unusual.

The pale, almost-white background shows just a hint of a grey color; a grey background to shibori dyeing is a trait of shibori dyeing in from the 1920s, 30s and 40s, so it is probably this fragment dates from this time.

The cotton is commercially woven and there are ingrained creases from this length's former life as a yukata or an unlined kimono.

A length of shibori in a desirable pattern and in a very unusual color.

Recommended.
