A Length of Striped Cotton: Six Perfectly Spaced Patches
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
59" x 13", 150 cm x 33 cm
This is a wonderful length of old hand loomed cotton that shows a pattern of variegated grey-blues and black-blues, the weft yarn showing occasional slubs.
The color and weaving is quite even and with the exception of a few, barely noticeable, small, soft stains, the length is in good condition.
The beauty of this piece is in its patching: there are six small patches, each of them in wonderful 19th century cotton cloth, and each of them sits just at the selvedge edge of this piece of cotton.
The patching is beautifully discreet and very subtle. An attractive detail.
A lovely length of good quality, old Japanese cotton cloth.
