A Length of Stencil Resist Dyed Cotton: Woven Mat or Paving Stone Pattern
early twentieth century
36" x 13 3/4", 91.5 cm x 35 cm
This is a length of indigo dyed cotton whose pattern is realized using the katazome or stencil resist dyeing technique.
The length, showing a design based on paving stones or a woven mat, was taken from a garment, so the piece shows ingrained creases due to its former life as an under-kimono.
The repeat pattern is interesting and geometric, and by looking at the detail photos, attached here, you can see that the stencil resist technique applied to this length is not perfect: there are lines of overlap which are evident from this hand stenciling process, seen in detail on the accompanying photos.
In good, used condition, with some surface wear and a bit of light fading.
A lovely length of cotton, and one with a good amount of age and character.
