A Length of Rustic Katazome Cotton: End Bolt
early twentieth century
56" x 12 1/2", 142 cm x 32 cm
This is a length of very deeply dyed indigo cotton which is decorated in the stencil resist or katazome method.
This piece here was taken from the end of the bolt which can be seen by the white corners and the band of pure indigo at the bottom of the cloth.
Look carefully at the detail photographs to see what is interesting about this length of katazome dyed cotton: the dyeing is not flawless as in most katazome dyeing: the repeat is very clearly seen, that is, the size and placement of the stencil is obvious which is usually not the case in katazome dyeing.
However, in the case of this length here these irregularities are really charming and add character to the piece.
A very nice length of rustic katazome dyed cotton.
