A Length of Shibori: Large-Scale Cracked Ice Design
mid twentieth century
59" x 13 3/4", 150 cm x 35 cm
This is a length of indigo dyed cotton shibori cloth which was taken from a yukata which is a casual, unlined summer kimono.
The large-scale, geometric pattern shown on this length seems to be a variant of a classic Chinese motif often seen in Japanese design, that of the "cracked ice" design, a symbol of spring.
The length shows some ingrained creases from its former life as a garment but it is in good condition for its age and its former use as a yukata.
