A Length of Shibori: Hand Spun Cotton
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
34 1/2" x 12 1/2", 87.5 cm x 31.75 cm
The thread quality of this hand spun cotton length of indigo dyed shibori cloth is rustic and very soft--almost gauzy--in the hand.
This is a fragment from a shibori dyed kimono which shows several techniques of shibori, and two tones of indigo color; the shibori is rustic with its imperfect white designs and its tied or knotted field of double blue.
The cloth is fragile and shows a few splits and some small holes near the top of the piece. Additionally there are four patches applied to the surface.
A richly colored and patterned length of old shibori, this fragment is truly beautiful.
