A Length of Rustic Katazome: Two Sided
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
68" x 13 1/2", 173 cm x 34 cm
This is a length of indigo dyed katazome cotton whose technique is rustic and imperfect--and both sides have been stencil resisted so each of the two sides is equally bright with blue and white contrasting tones.
The pattern is that of ivy and chrysantemums which are sprouting stylized arabesques, a very common design motif in this kind of cloth.
The cotton is seemingly hand spun and certainly hand woven, and this is a beautiful length of rustically dyed katazome cotton.
