A Length of Reversible, Very Dark Indigo Katazome Cotton: Rustic
early to mid twentieth century
71" x 13 1/2", 180.5 cm x 34 cm
This densely patterned length of hand woven, hand dyed cotton shows evenly staggered, highly stylized chrysanthemums which are set within a field of small-scale karakusa or arabesque. The indigo dye is so dense it appears to be black in color.
And the white-on-blue/black effect is dazzling and bright because the cloth was resisted on both its sides, which means that this pattern is as vivid on the proper front as it is on the proper back.
Seemingly unusued, this cloth is in very good, used condition, and than hand of the cotton is tight, thickly woven and still very durable. Note the charming mismatching of the repeat pattern, shown in the detail photo attached.
