A Length of Pieced Striped Cloth: 19th Century Cotton
late nineteenth century
68" x 13", 172.5 cm x 33 cm
This is a really beautiful length of hand woven cotton which shows extremely subtle stripes. The length is warped with alternating bands of white and very pale blue yarns which are interspersed with a narrow, dark indigo line. The weft is fed with a deep indigo colored cotton yarn which brings the color contrast to this very dark pitch, creating a lush and rich color situation.
The length is composed of four separate pieces which are hand stitched together. The cotton is wonderfully dense in weight and the colors are rich and almost velvety in look.
