A Length of Picture Kasuri: Peonies against Gradient Stripes
early twentieth century
49" x 13", 124.5 cm x 33 cm
What a wonderful length of rustic indigo dyed cotton kasuri.
As is very clear from the photos seen here there are beautiful, linear depictions of simply rendered peonies set against ochre toned warp-oriented stripes.
There are five full peonies depicted using weft yarns.
The length is an almost black tone of indigo.
The selvedges are uneven in a very nice, tactile way which indicates this might be hand woven. There are some snags and some surface wear to the piece which is consistent with its age and its lifetime of use and if you look at the detail photos offered here you will see that there are two small patched holes.
Super delightful and beautifully rustic this is a desirable length of old kasuri woven cotton.
