A Length of Pictorial Shibori: Birds
early to mid twentieth century
66" x 13", 167.5 cm x 33 cm
This is a length of indigo dyed cotton shibori that shows 5 1/2 tie-dyed roundels. In the center of each roundel is a bird that is rendered by stitched shibori; filling the space around the roundels is a background of miura shibori in a pale, dull blue.
This panel was taken from what seems to have been a summer futon cover; the pale colors and the light hearted motif have a psychologically cooling effect.
Three of the five-and-a-half birds depicted here show patches on the back; this is detailed in the detail photos that accompany this post.
This length is in fairly good, used condition with the indigo still bright and strong.
An unusual length of shibori which is recommended.
