A Length of Patterned Cloth: Autumn Grasses

$30.00 USD

mid twentieth century
48" x 13 3/4", 122 cm x 35 cm

This length of cloth is of unknown technique: it could be commercially produced but it seems more likely that it was somehow hand-made, however the method is not clear.

The lovely and mysterious pattern seems to be that of a quintessential autumn flower called obana or a kind of pampas grass, which is one of the traditional "seven flowers of autumn."

A lush and moody design this is a lovely depiction of a Japanese traditional design motif. There is faint discoloration to the top area, shown in an attached detail photograph.
