A Length of Patched Katazome Cotton: Stripes on Floral
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
55" x 13 1/2", 139.5 cm x 34.25 cm
This length of katazome dyed cotton is hand woven from hand spun cotton yarns, the pattern seen on the side opposite the one highlighted is one of highly stylized chrysanthemums of two types against a field of arabesque.
The length is wonderfully patched in striped cotton, there are four patches in total, two at the top and two down the left side.
The indigo has faded or oxidized to a soft grey-blue tone. The fading and the soft, overall surface abrasion is beautiful in the way it brings out or enhances the presence of the hand spun cotton yarns.
Charming, this length shows very nice, quite old, hand spun cotton yarns.
