A Length of Old Shibori: Hand Spun Cotton
early twentieth century
34" x 12 1/2", 86.25 cm x 31.75 cm
This is a beautiful, short length of indigo dyed cotton shibori, the indigo seeming to be botanical and the cotton cloth is hand woven of hand spun yarns.
The pattern is that of fundo tsunagi or counterweights: the pattern is an illusion to ingots of metal that are used when weighing goods. As can be seen in the detail photos attached the pattern is created by stitching and by tie dyeing, so two shibori techniques are employed.
The cotton is beautiful in the hand, the indigo color--two tones--is rich, and this is a really lovely fragment of old indigo dyed shibori.
