A Length of Nagoya Sarasa Cotton: Family Crests
mid twentieth century
38" x 13 1/2", 96.5 cm x 34.25 cm
This is a fancifully designed length of cotton of a mid twentieth century type referred to as Nagoya sarasa, an indication that its design makes reference to Indian trade cloth, even if this reference is oblique and this design is decidedly Japanese in design.
The dyed cloth has a hand made touch and its colors--a rust and a blue--have a watery or translucent quality which adds life and light to the piece.
The repeat pattern is that of a blue diamond flower inside a hexagon form. This motif is set against a background of arabesque of the same color which creates a cohesive, all over design.
This is a very handsome length of old cotton and the dyeing technique is beautifully executed.
Lovely.
