A Length of Mottled Indigo Dyed Hemp Mesh: Two Patches
early to mid twentieth century
67" x 12 1/2", 171.5 cm x 31.5 cm
This is a handsome length of rustic, indigo dyed hemp cloth which shows mottling from what was said to be a bleaching process. This is a panel from a kaya or mosquito netting, hence the very loose, open weave of the cloth.
The color is a faded, mottled pale warm blue that veers into a darker, warm blue in the areas of great color concentration. The hemp yarns are wiry and they give a beautifully rustic appearance to this length.
There are two patches applied to this length, one an indigo ikat and the other a small, yellow cotton patch.
This is a charming and really lovely length of old, hemp kaya with very good patching and lots of character and thread integrity.
