A Length of Middle Figure Stencil Dyed Cotton: Small Pattern
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
28" x 12 1/2", 71 cm x 31.5 cm
This is a short length of stencil resist dyed, or katazome, cotton which was dyed in indigo. This length seems to have been taken from a garment, presumably an under garment called a juban. The cotton is hand loomed and is of a good weight.
The small pattern is geometric and is an all-over design. The design is based on a grid, so when looking at this piece from a short distance you can see that the white and blue areas are equally distributed in a kind of checkerboard arrangement.
Some wear from age, but overall this is a very nice piece of old, katazome cloth with a discrete design and wonderful indigo coloration.
