A Length of Large Scale Patterned Shibori: Chrysanthemums
mid twentieth century
56" x 13", 142 cm x 33 cm
This is a beautifully graphic length of mid century shibori which used a synthetic indigo on a machine loomed cotton.
The pattern is a very large repeat of rangy, spare chrysanthemum blooms that are gently cascading down the length of the cloth, barely touching one another.
The pattern is bold and striking from the top of the length to the bottom. The lightweight cotton is a very clear white, which may not be obvious from these photographs in which the cotton may appear to have a yellowish cast: in reality, the cotton is stark white.
As this length was taken from a yukata which is a casual, unlined, cotton kimono, there are ingrained creases from its decades of use as such.
But this is a wonderful pattern, with strong graphic appeal and an expertly rendered shibori.
