A Length of Katazome Dyed Peonies: Early Twentieth Century
early twentieth century
57 1/2" x 13 3/4", 146 cm x 35 cm
This length of indigo dyed cotton was taken from a yogi which is an oversized, stuffed sleeping kimono, or, in other words, a kimono-shaped duvet.
The cloth is katazome dyed on was stenciled on both of its sides, so each of the two sides is quite bright with dyed and undyed cloth: in this case, however, the registration of the stencils is slightly off, so there is a bit of a shaky look to the finished pattern.
The overall repeat pattern is a bold design of realistically rendered peonies whose design appears to have some naturalistic, Western influence. The cotton is of a good weight and is hand loomed.
A very handsome length of deeply indigo dyed cotton with just a big of discoloration/ light fading present at the proper top edge of this length.
