A Length of Katazome Dyed Cotton: Tea Berry or Hollyhock
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
36" x 13 1/2", 91.5 cm x 34 cm
This lovely length of indigo dyed katazome cotton shows a fanciful repeat pattern of hollyhock or teaberry (the two motifs are almost identical) amid a field of arabesque and stylized chrysanthemums.
The hand woven, hand dyed cloth shows an overall patina from wear and the indigo dye, therefore, is very slightly faded.
Still, this is a really charming short length of katazome dyed cotton from old Japan showing a lovely pattern.
