A Length of Katazome Dyed Cotton: Rustic, Unusual Design
late nineteenth century
39" x 13", 99 cm x 33 cm
This is a boldly patterned length of indigo dyed katazome cotton. The pattern which is based on the prominent, jagged "X" shapes is a variant on matsukawabishi or stylized pine bark: hollyhocks occupy the center of each of these exes.
The quality of the katazome dyeing is rustic and rough; the cotton is of good weight and seems to be hand woven from hand spun cotton yarns. Please note the area of faint staining to the top of the length, shown in detail on the accompanying photographs.
An unusual pattern and a very good length of old katazome cloth.
