A Length of Katazome Dyed Cotton: Rain Dragons in a Spare Pattern
early twentieth century
48" x 12 3/4", 122 cm x 32.5 cm
This length of indigo dyed katazome cotton has been stencil resisted on both sides of the cloth making it "reversible." The pattern is equally bright white on both its sides.
The spare pattern shows a smattering of images: plum blossoms, maple leaves, the suggestion of a tortoise shell pattern, and most noticeably, stylized rain dragons. The restrained white areas bolstered by the starburst images create a sparkling effect along this length.
The condition is good and used and its color is deep, rich and velvety indigo.
A lovely length of katazome dyed cotton and one showing an unusual design and pattern.
