A Length of Katazome Dyed Boro Cloth: Double Chrysanthemums
ca. late nineteenth century
65" x 12 3/4", 165 cm x 32.5 cm
What a charming, katazome dyed pattern can be seen on this length of indigo dyed cotton boro cloth. And the color, as seen on the reverse of the piece, the side we are showing here, is a beautiful, medium-value, warm indigo blue.
The katazome pattern is delightful: it is a repeat pattern of fairly large pairs of stylized chrysanthemums, one light and one dark. This length, taken from a futon cover, is hand stitched from two panels of cloth.
To the surface there are hand stitched five cotton patches; the cotton of this lovely length seems to be hand spun--certainly it is hand loomed.
An absolutely beautiful and somehow upbeat piece of old boro, this lovely thing is in good, used condition, with the exception of one bean-sized hole, one the size of a pin head and another little scuff, all shown on the accompanying detail photographs.
Wonderful--and recommended.
