A Length of Katazome Cotton: Shibori-Like

$90.00 USD

early twentieth century

This charming length of stencil resist dyed cloth is hand woven from hand spun yarns and its texture is reflective of this method of weaving: it is beautiful.

The resisted design is delightful and playful--it shows a repeat pattern of white faux shibori "starbursts" arranged against a a slightly faded indigo ground.

Often times katazome cloth was meant to mimic another type of dyeing technique like kasuri, and in this case shibori.

However this particular pattern seems not to want to "fool" the eye but rather it makes a bold, stylized and self-conscious allusion the shibori technique.

Wonderful and recommended.
