A Length of Katazome Cotton: Peonies and Chrysanthemums
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
36 1/2" x 13 1/2", 92.5 cm x 34 cm
This is a lovely length of indigo dyed katazome cotton which shows a large-scale repeat of stylized chrysanthemums bracketing lush peonies. Extending from the peonies are arabesques called karakusa in Japan--karakusa are often paired with floral patterns on bedding material which is the origin of this fragment.
The indigo is deep and clear and the cotton is nicely white.
A charming length of old katazome cotton with a fairly unusual large repeat.
In good, used condition.
