A Length of Katazome Cotton: Light and Dark Chrysanthemums
early twentieth century
57" x 13 1/2", 145 cm x 34.25 cm
This is a fanciful length of stencil resist dyed cotton which shows a repeat pattern of twin stylized chrysanthemums in staggered, vertical rows: one row is composed of white or fully resisted chrysanthemums while the other row is of dark chrysanthemum which is detailed by resisted white lines.
The arrangement of these flowers is shingled in a sense, but there is a striking sense of design because the interplay of light and dark is foremost in the composition.
In used condition, this is a beautiful length of indigo dyed cotton and one that shows a delightful design and composition.
The hand woven cotton cloth is of a very nice, heavy weight.
Please note there is some faint staining to the entire piece which can be seen if you look carefully at the attached detail photos. The stains are not obvious.
