A Length of Katazome Cotton: Faded Bengara Highlights
early twentieth century
34" x 13 1/2", 86.5 cm x 34 cm
This is a length of indigo dyed katazome cotton which is stencil resisted in a cheery pattern. It depicts stylized chrysanthemums against a background of arabesque and a spray of small dots--really charming.
The pattern is accented by small, now very faded orange highlights, a dyeing concept often seen in old katazome cloth. Iron oxide-derived pigment or bengara would be hand stenciled directly onto the cloth to add visual interest. As just stated, these orange details are now very washed-out of the pattern.
A lively and beautiful piece of katazome dyed cotton from old Japan.
