A Length of Katazome Cloth: Repeat Pattern of Cranes
ca. late nineteenth century
19" x 13", 48.5 cm x 33 cm
This piece of old cotton cloth is woven from hand spun yarns and is hand loomed; the cloth itself has a gauzy hand.
The katazome, or stencil resist pattern is a beautiful asagi or pale blue and shows a field of regularly spaced diamond shapes, the diamonds being comprised of stylized cranes arranged in mirror image.
The cloth is somewhat threadbare at its proper top portion, which is understandable due to its age and its loose weave.
A beautiful length of old katazome cloth.
