A Length of Kasuri Dyed Cotton: Grid and Stylized Arrow Feathers
early twentieth century
62" x 13 1/4", 157.5 cm x 33.5 cm
This length of hand woven cotton kasuri cloth is of good weight; its color tone is blackish, slightly faded.
The pattern is a nice one. It is a grid whose intersecting points are widened by white warp and weft yarns--and inside each square of the grid we see a stepped shape that is meant to represent the traditional Japanese design motif of the arrow feather called yabane.
The surface of the cloth shows patina from wear and there are slightly small holes or "pits" to the surface, none of the few of them terribly noticeable.
This is a very handsome length of old kasuri cotton, nicely woven and with an elegant, traditional design.
