A Length of Jishiro Katazome: Complex Pattern
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
34" x 12 3/4", 86.5 cm x 32.5 cm
This is a beautiful length of jishiro katazome or blue-on-white stencil resist dyed cotton cloth.
The bold, large-scale pattern on this length is extremely complex and laden with symbolism: the dark, wheel-like forms are in fact three folding fans arranged as circle.
These fans are the centerpiece of a larger design, the interlocking circles pattern which shows at each of its interstices a small, button-like chrysanthemum. The field within each of the segments of the interlocking circles is that of a repeat pattern of hexagons, in this case, these hexagons are a tortoise shell pattern which conveys a wish for long life.
A boldly graphic pattern and one that is rich in meaning. In used condition with light fading and an overall patina from wear.
