A Length of Intricately Designed Katazome Cotton: Flying Cranes
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
37 1/2" x 13", 95 cm x 33 cm
This is a beautiful length of indigo dyed katazome cotton that shows elaborately rendered flying cranes who are frolicking among the clouds. The same crane is repeated on each side of the cloth but moving in opposite directions.
The crane itself is intricately designed: its layers of feathers are indicted in good detail and the detail is enhanced by the inclusion of an orange pigment-based dye that was applied to create a "fancier" cloth than had it just been resist dyed in blue and white.
The swirling cloud forms add levity to the design and the overall attention to detail on this length is marvelous.
A delightful, very, very good length of indigo dyed katazome cotton.
