A Length of Indigo Dyed Katazome Cotton: Marumon

$75.00 USD

early twentieth century
43" x 13 1/4", 109 cm x 33.5 cm

This is a length of faded, indigo dyed cotton katazome cloth which shows a charming repeat pattern of stylized cranes which are designed as marumon or roundels.

The roundel is circumscribed by a border of stylized wisteria while young pine branches fall playfully within the dark areas of the design. Both crane and pine are symbols of long life and conjugal fidelity (cranes mate for life; pine needles fall in pairs) so this information indicates that this length was probably taken from bedding offered to a new couple in their bridal trousseau.

A solid piece of indigo dyed cotton is hand stitched to the bottom of this length and the piece is light faded from wear.

Just delightful.
