A Length of Indigo Dyed Katazome Cotton: Chrysanthemum Variation
early twentieth century
63" x 13 1/4", 160 cm x 33.5 cm
This length of indigo dyed cotton was dyed in the stencil resist or katazome method.
It shows a repeat pattern of crowded and beautifully stylized chrysanthemums, a traditional motif used for katazome dyed, specifically for bedding. The length was taken from a futon cover.
The hand woven cotton is of a good weight and the indigo color is nice and strong. The pattern itself, too, is rich and vibrant, and the way the chrysanthemums are rendered is playful and graphically interesting.
A wonderful length of old katazome cloth and one with a vibrant pattern.
