A Length of Indigo Dyed Cotton Shibori: Tohoku
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
51" x 12 1/2", 129.5 cm x 31.75 cm
This is a beautiful length of indigo dyed shibori cotton from Japan's north eastern region called Tohoku. Most likely this shibori was made in Akita.
The cotton itself is hand loomed and is of a very good weight. The shibori is both bound and stitched and the result is a repeat of four little white-on-blue "bouquets" of what appear to be a suggestion of a floral motif, perhaps flowers against a lattice.
The white cotton is bright and rich, the indigo is velvety and deeply colored. In good condition.
